VEG CALF LEATHERS IN FOUR QUESTIONS

We’re so excited to introduce veg calf leather to our collection this season! So we sat down with Melody Dorward, our brilliant product development lead, to talk all things veg calf.

WHAT ARE VEG CALF LEATHERS AND HOW ARE THEY CREATED?

Vegetable tanning uses tannins, which are naturally occurring compounds found in tree bark and other plant materials, to convert hides into leather. The process is slower and requires more skill than chrome tanning, but it results in leather that is strong, durable and has a unique natural look.

WHAT DO THEY FEEL LIKE AND HOW DOES THE VEG TANNING PROCESS IMPACT THEIR LOOK?

It’s a process designed to celebrate the unique aspects of our leather products. Rather than chasing uniformity, this process maintains the natural characteristics of quality leather hides rather than covering them with pigments or treatments.

With time, the leather will start to take on a beautiful patina look. Keep in mind that regular sun exposure, natural grease, moisture and sweat might have a darkening effect on the leather. We love this aspect of these shoes.

WHY ARE WE USING VEG CALF LEATHERS?

Vegetable-tanned leather is also considered to be more breathable, more comfortable, and more resistant to aging than chrome-tanned leather.

HOW IS IT A RESPONSIBLE CHOICE?

Vegetable-tanned leather is a natural and eco-friendly material that has been used by craftspeople and artisans for over a thousand years. This type of leather is made using natural plant-based tannins from trees instead of harsh chemicals, making it better for the environment.
